Flurry

Generative audio-visual artwork that fuses color and motion of multiple videos

(Turn on sound)

Concept

Flurry is an autonomous web crawler that moves from one video clip to the next, while continuously merging the found footage into new imagery by fusing their motion and color. In doing so, it synthesizes grainy images made from pixels of the past and present. Metaphorically speaking, it whirls up a cloud of dust and lets it settle in new arrangements.

Technical implementation

The optical flow of video A and using it to displace pixels in video B. That means the image only changes in regions where there is movement. Furthermore, any displaced pixel has a high probability of being the color that is currently being displayed and a relatively low chance of being sampled from the current frame of video B. This stochastic approach gives the synthesized image its grainy look, while still maintaining slow but consistent change over time. The sound is generated using granular synthesis.
