The Sandberg Instituut identity and website is based on the metaphor of the institute as a library, in which each department, person, and project makes up one element of the knowledge archive. The identity system therefore allows for formal flexibility and development over time, to reflect that the institute itself is constantly changing.
A new typeface and type system has been developed as the centerpiece of Sandberg’s identity, while also being a research project in its own right. LUST collaborated with Atelier Carvalho Bernau to research the question “What can a typeface be in the 21st century?”.
Carvalho Bernau designed a typeface that can be used as both a functional text face and a more experimental skeleton that can be used in conjunction with a typeface generator tool to create infinite variations of the typeface.
The tool allows users to directly manipulate parameters such as the width, weight, and slant angle of the letters – and more specifically the shape and angle of the pen that is used to apply to the virtual stroke along the skeleton:
Students, alumni, tutors and affiliates of the Sandberg Instituut can use the tool to generate iterations of the typeface, to be used for projects and publications. Each variation is added to a database and made available to download.
